Recovery Mode.

August 9, 2012

Surgery went well, Blake was only on the breathing machine for less than 24 hours- Blake was extubated yesterday to nasal cannula on the wall- and ALL oxygen was removed this morning. Blake is still a little fussy and at times quite sleepy but we are in recovery mode!!

Dr. Ackerman has seen Blake everyday and they did some testing to see if the shunt was working properly...so far so good! We don't even have to see the neurologist for another 2-3 weeks! Blake's incisions are healing well and he hasn't had many Brady (heart rate dropping) episodes! Yay Blake!!

They started giving blake half the amounts of feeds he was getting prior to surgery and today they have started to give him full feeds again because Lil' man let them know he was STARVING!! We are trying to bottle feed again, but Blake is only taking about 1/4 th of the bottle each time, the rest is being giving through his NG tube. But we will get back to where we were!! Daddy even placed Blake's NG tube today for the first time without anyone's help!! He did great!!

So the new plan...this weekend we will be working on bottle feeding again to get him back to taking 80% or more of his feedings by mouth! Then...Monday the plan is to meet with the general pediatric surgery team and get the go on Blake's hernia repair, or atleast find out when they want to do it!

We are still working on finding a pediatrician that will accept Blake as a patient...we have slightly hit a brick wall when it comes to finding the doctor we want! But we have a good team of doctors and nurse practitioners to help us with that now!

Next week we will also do Blake's car seat test to make sure he can ride in our car seat we got him for the LONG trip home..

We are convinced ONE day we will get to go home!! But for now we are back in feeding and growing and patiently (tapping our feet and fiddling our thumbs) waiting for the day we get to go home!

Before surgery with daddy and mommy.

After surgery...back on that dang breathing machine!

"seriously guys! This again?!?"

Yesterday- right after being extubated!

"whoa- you would not believe what I have been through!"

"it's been a long journey."

"Don't even know where to start"

"But I'm doing great!!"

  2. Dr. Ackerman is who did Eva's surgery, and we liked her too - Blake is definitely in good hands with her!

I have been out of the loop for a while so it was good to get caught up and see how big Blake is getting! Still thinking and praying for you every day. Hang in there guys, you will be out of the woods soon and this will all seem like a dream.
